LINDA A. MILLER - STATEMENT

Creative expression has been my lifelong passion.  I am drawn to imagery that reveals light and energy.  Intrigued by the play of opposing forces, I find beauty in the balance between kinetic movement and meditative stillness, or physicality and inner essence. A vibrant color palette evokes dynamic life force through lushness and boldness. With the strong color I add subtle detail and embellishment to draw the viewer in for a more intimate look. However, making art is not just about technique. The creative process is a key element in itself. I gain stability from a long time yoga and meditation practice, which in turn feeds my artistic practice by helping to strengthen my expressive voice. Trusting in an intuitive sense, thread painting becomes a playful dance with the sewing machine as each piece emerges. I envision thread and fiber as a metaphor for the intertwining aspects of life, allowing my art to flow out from wholeness.

BIOGRAPHY

Linda trained as a visual artist with a focus on printmaking and photography, receiving a B.A. from U.C.L.A., and completing the Printmaking Certificate Program at Bradford College of Art and Technology in England. At a young age she learned to sew, knit, crochet and embroider at home, further refining the craft through the years and in her professional life. In 1994 Linda began to explore quilt making, growing to love its graphic, textural, and tactile qualities. The meshing of sewing and art skills made a natural transition to fiber arts becoming the chosen medium.  In 2005 Linda developed the idea for the Bhavana Project, an ongoing group work based on Tibetan prayer flags and influenced by her studies in eastern philosophy. Go to The Bhavana Project.  Her work is commissioned and exhibited nationally.
